The Necker Mauritius Open PSA Gold Tournament follows three editions of the Necker Pro Squash Open, during which all efforts were made to follow the international PSA rules in order to make these tournaments the most professional possible, despite not yet being official.
The three previous years’ editions took place in three different locations around the island, namely La Croisette Mall in Grand Baie, Bagatelle Mall in Moka and Le Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis.
All editions of the Necker Pro Squash Open had the particularity of being held on an all-glass court as per worldwide professional standards.
Some of the top 10 squash players in the world, both men and women, were invited to participate, which promoted the event amongst professional squash players across the world.
The last edition, the Necker Pro Squash Open 2019 was also a demonstration sport for 10th edition of the JIOI, during which some of the best players from each island in the Indian Ocean were invited to represent their nations and to bring this sport to a JIOI level.
All editions of the Necker Pro Squash Open are accompanied by satellite activities, which bring a social responsibility dimension to the tournaments.
The Professional Squash Association has confirmed that the Necker Mauritius Open 2020 Presented by Beachcomber has been cancelled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The PSA World Tour Gold tournament - which was rescheduled to take place between August 18-22 following the suspension of the PSA World Tour due to the pandemic - would have been the first PSA event to take place on the picturesque island.
The PSA has been working closely with the tournament promoters in order to hold the tournament following the disruption to the PSA World Tour, but border restrictions in place in Mauritius mean that a decision has been made to cancel the tournament, with the intention of holding the inaugural Mauritius Open in June 2021 instead.
